President William Ruto has maintained that his government is committed to lifting the standards of sports in the country so that athletes continue their dominance both locally and internationally.

Speaking on  Sunday in an interview with journalists at the State House, the head of state said the lifting of the suspension imposed by Fifa on the Football Kenya Federation last year was a step in the right direction.

"When I came into office, I told the Cabinet Secretary for sports Ababu Namwamba to talk to Fifa. I said we cannot continue to have our country suspended and within four months, the suspension was lifted. We now need to profile our sports in a positive way."

On the doping menace that has become a thorny issue, Ruto added:

"We were almost being banned in athletics because of doping. The government has invested 5m dollars (almost 600m shillings) to make sure we have the ecosystem to test our athletes. I think they do it now every week to make sure that doping is not part of our sport."

"I am very clear in where I want to take the sports. You heard me announce that we are going to have a bottom-up tournament from the ward level up to the national category and the finals will be on December 12

"I am going to work with KBC and bring sponsors on board to bring back the televising of all our sports. The government will also inject more resources into sports because we believe sports is a unifying factor."
