Wazalendo, Impala veterans lead quintet to Masters hockey show

The masters tournament is said to be age specific as it is made for players who are past the competitive age with its rules and regulations tailored to the age set.

In Summary

•The event is anticipated to have five more teams in addition to the other three teams, Kisumu Masters Field Hockey Club, Blue Ocean Chiefs, and Nakuru masters.

•The second series will take place in Nairobi on June 3–4, the third series in Mombasa on the first week of August, and the final series in Nakuru on the last week of October.

Wazalendo Veterans and Impala Veterans are among the five teams that have already registered for the Masters' Hockey tournament to be held at Kisumu Day High school on April 7.

The event is anticipated to have five more teams in addition to the other three teams,

Kisumu Masters Field Hockey Club, Blue Ocean Chiefs and Nakuru Masters have also confirmed participation with the organisers expecting five more.

The tournament is run under the World Hockey Masters with the support of the International Hockey Federation.

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) deputy match and fixtures secretary Moses Majiwa said: “We want an increased number of participating players, especially those who missed last season."

"We also target more ladies as we look forward to having a ladies-only tournament in the future. We also expect tough competition, especially from the five already registered teams since they are used to the tournament."

The Masters' tournament targets women over 35 years old and men aged above 40.

Majiwa added: “The aim of this tournament is to keep the players on the field for as long as possible, no matter their age and their ability. Keeping them on the pitch helps promote a healthy lifestyle.” 

“We also want to tap into the wisdom and expertise of this group of players to enhance governance in the sport right from club level, county associations and at the national level,” concluded Majiwa.

The second series will take place in Nairobi on June 3–4, the third is set for Mombasa on the first week of August while the final event is set for Nakuru on the last week of October.
