The Kenya Hockey Union League will set new dates for the start of the 2023 season after the league failed to kick off last weekend.

KHU secretary general Wycliffe Ongori said delayed registration by clubs made it impossible for the league to start.

He also noted that the national under-21 teams preparations for the Junior Africa Cup which ended last week in Ismailia, Egypt proved a hindrance.

"The teams failed to register in time for the league. Clubs have to show interest by registering because that is the only way the union will have a clear information of the teams that will be involved," Ongori said.

"Of course  we wanted to give the juniors the opportunity to showcase their talent in the continental assignment," Ongori added.

The 2022-23 season ended in January, paving way for the top three teams in the Premier League to participate in the African Cup for Club Championship that was held in Nairobi between February 13-19.

"I believe the decision will be made later this week or early next week. Hopefully, the season will get underway in the second weekend of April. I know for a fact that the matches and fixtures department are burning their midnight oil to come up with the fixtures," Ongori observed.

Meanwhile, Butali Warriors team manager Victor Opere has revealed the team's new signings will be known on Thursday.

"We are working around the clock  to have the new players on board by Thursday. The small details only remain to be ironed out and their registration will be complete," Opere presumed.
