Stakeholders have lashed out at Kenya Volleyball Federation's decision to take the women's fourth leg matches to Mombasa.

Out of eight teams, only three teams honoured the leg. Kenya Pipeline, KCB and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) were the only teams to participate in the coastal city.

Other teams including Kenya Army, Kenya Prisons, Nairobi Prisons, Kenya Defence Forces and Vihiga gave the event a wide berth.

Financial challenges were cited as the teams' biggest dilemma hence the inability to travel. However, the idea of walkovers did not go down well with the lovers of the game.

KVF technical director David Lung'aho was critical of the decision saying the federation ought to have listened to the teams' suggestion of staging the games in Nairobi rather than Mombasa.

"It would be best to stick with the proposal of clubs to play the games in  Nairobi. Volleyball is not worth walkovers. Why take the matches to Mombasa when the tough financial times are biting? quipped Lung'aho.

"The ideal situation would be to play the remaining legs in Nairobi and take the playoffs to Mombasa. I don't see why KVF insisted on Mombasa. Some decisions need to be discussed. It was unfair to give teams points without breaking sweat."

He continued: "I know the executive will have a meeting soon and I believe part of the discussion will be based on the low turnout of teams in Mombasa. That was totally out of order."

KCB team manager Moses Kimani was equally bemused saying: "There was no communication. We were to agree on date and venue but we just received a letter notifying us of Mombasa.

"Lack of personnel and funding needs to be put into consideration. KDF and Army were to play each other, so then who do you give points when both were not present?"

"The federation is giving teams hard time. We are waiting for KVF's decision but it's going to be controversial."

Only two matches were played with KCB losing to Pipeline 3-1 on Friday before returning to winning ways against DCI in straight sets.

Following the results, Pipeline lead the standings with maximum 12 points from four matches. KCB and DCI are second and third respectively both on nine points but different win ratio.

Defending Champions Kenya Prisons stay fourth with six points. KDF, Prisons Nairobi, Army and Vihiga are fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. ]
