The General Service Unit have raided Nyanza Prisons and recruited teen sensation libero William Odongo as they seek to bolster their reception.

Odongo, 20, will fight for a starting berth alongside the more experienced duo of Andrew Wafula and Gabriel Ndomboi. Wafula was regular in the just concluded season as the paramilitary side romped to their fifth straight gong to highlight their dominance in the national men's volleyball league.

"Odongo is very talented and we hope to polish his basic skills. I wanted a junior player to provide competition for the two players, who are already at my disposal," coach Gideon Tarus remarked.

The tactician further said that since the departure of Noah Bett, GSU have failed to find a perfect replacement, forcing him to bestow the huge responsibility on Wafula.

He said Odongo's impressive stats convinced GSU to go all-out for his signature.

"He is among the best players in his position in the league and his ability to thrive under immense pressure convinced us that he  brings the X-factor to the team."

The decade-long-serving Tarus is credited for moulding a well-oiled GSU outfit that has conquered the local scene and made the Kenya Volleyball Federation men's title their own.

With eyes fixed on the African Club Championship next year, Tarus said there's a need to inject fresh and quality additions to the team to extend their winning streak. Tarus believes Odongo will bring a winning mentality to the team.

"He motivates the rest of the players, brings morale, and is vocal on the court. He is like a captain and coach combined."

Tarus hinted at bringing more new faces on board with setter Brian Melly and middle blocker Simon Kipkorir 'Kosirai' rumoured to be on their way out.

"We will look to replace Melly and Kosirai should they leave. Abiud Chirchir has already linked up with his club in France so more new players will be signed. Any other player will be allowed to head overseas should a firm interest and offers to arrive."
