Over 22 teams have confirmed participation in the Machakos Mega handball tournament set for this weekend at Machakos University.
This will be the 5th edition of the 5-a-side tournament and the first to take place outside Kisumu.
According to tournament coordinator, Brian Were, Legends Club will host the event although last year’s winners, General Service Unit, will not take part.
Last year’s ladies' winners Kisumu Academy have confirmed participation and will hope to defend their title for the fourth consecutive year.
He said teams from Kisumu, Nairobi, Mombasa, and Garissa have also confirmed participation in the tournament that is sponsored by Qube Energy Kenya and the Machakos County Government. Participating teams will pay a registration fee of Sh700 each.
Some of the teams that have confirmed participation include Machakos Legends, Kisumu Academy, Assassins, Mombasa Saints, Recce Kitui, Rongai, Tishville, Ingwe, Bullets, Garissa, and Shakers.
In the women's category, hosts Legend Queens, Shakers Queens, Kisumu Academy, and Blades among others will feature.
He said more teams are expected to confirm their participation by Friday. “Some teams have shown interest but have not confirmed. We have given them up to Friday to confirm participation,” he said.
