Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed believes the increased prize money in the Kenya Open will continue to attract top DP World Tour pros into the country.
Amina said this year’s event was oversubscribed with quite a big chunk of pros being placed on the waiting list.
“The increment of the Prize money from 1 million to 2 million euros is a clear indication of the event’s growth in the recent past. We hope more corporates will come forward to boost the prize kitty and make Kenya Open an event of choice on the Tour,” said Amina yesterday at Muthaiga.
The 2022 edition of the annual Magical Kenya Open golf tournament is back at Muthaiga, where it was born 55 years ago. The tournament was preceded by the Pro-Am event on Wednesday. Amina commended the Kenya Open Golf Limited for maintaining international standards in organising this event.
“I am extremely proud that as a country, we are able to hold a sporting event that meets international standards.
"I pass my appreciation to the Government of Kenya under the leadership of H.E the President Hon. Uhuru for the immense support offered to the Ministry of Sports and the golf industry in the country.
"Sports ministry in collaboration with KENHA commissioned the construction of a golf course access bridge for the players, which enabled us to comply with DP World Tour Covid protocols for the events,” she added.
The event will be produced for live TV coverage across four days with the world feed being distributed all over the world.
In accordance with government regulations on the Covid-19 pandemic, Amina added that the event shall be held in strict adherence to health and safety protocols.
