Kenya Sports Shooting Federation president  Shoaib Vayani says the emergence of young talent in the sport bodes well for the country as they prepare for the 2026 Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal.

Vayani said they identified a number of young shooters at the past weekend's KSSF Open Day Jamhuri Shoot at Kwenia Range in Magadi who will be incorporated in the federation's Olympic development program in readiness for the quadrennial event.

"We thank parents who bring their children to the shooting sport. We try to allow them to participate in different disciplines. We saw different youngsters in action today and we will include them next year in our Olympics development program since we have the Youth Olympics in 2026," Vayani said.

He further pinpointed 11-year old Adnan Ibrahim and 12-year old Theo Ayub Mugo as youngsters KSSF have their eye on with the aim of nurturing their talents.

"We have Adnan and Theo who you have been performing impressively. You know the Youth Olympics is coming and so both of them, alongside other young shooters will be part of our development program. We have equipment provided to us by the international federation and hopefully, these young shooters will represent us in the near future," he said.

Vayani added: "It is such an incredible experience, some of the biggest stars are here. This is a yearly event we invite some of the shooting communities  to come and compete."

On his part, Mugo was over the moon after his excellent debut in the sport during which he scored 90 points to scoop the Best Junior's trophy at the one-day event.

"This is my first time shooting and it felt really great. My dad only told me we were going on an adventure but I didn't know what it was. I would want to join the army in the future and become a general," Mugo, who studies at Riara Springs School, said.

Likewise, Rayan Keshavjee, who finished second in the junior category with 61 points, said he is keen on going professional as he continues fine-tuning his craft.

"Right now, I am just shooting for fun but I want to be like my dad and start competing in more events. I know that I will need to work hard and be passionate as that is the key to success," Keshavjee said.

The event brought together six affiliated clubs including Kenya Defense Forces Shooting Club, National Police Services Shooting Club, Kenya Regiment Rifle Club, Mt Kenya Sports Shooting Club, and Women Sports Shooting Club.

Action shifts this week to Mombasa, where Bamburi Rifle Club will be marking its 50th anniversary whereas Limuru Gun Club will be holding an open day event.
