Athletics Kenya Universities have postponed the Africa Universities Cross Country trials scheduled for October 23 at Kabarak University.

AK-U secretary Edward Muema said the event was postponed after Athletics Kenya national office rescheduled their cross country events for two weeks to honour Olympian and world 10,000m bronze medalist Agnes Tirop, who was found dead in her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County last week.

AK President Jack Tuwei said: "In view of the latest developments, in honour of our fallen athletes, we have postponed the first and second legs of the AK Cross Country Series. The same goes for any other athletics event that was planned within the next two weeks.”

On Monday, Muema said: “As a way of honouring the departed athlete and following the postponement of all athletics events in the country, we have joined AK in postponing our event until the two-week mourning period is over.”

The event will now take place at Kabarak University in Nakuru County on November 6.

The event will be used to select a team of 15 athletes to represent Kenya at the Africa Universities Cross Country Championships to be held at Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology in Juja on November 20.

“We want to select 12 athletes for the event and at least three or four reserves,” Muema told the Star on phone.

He said Kenya will be looking to win both individual and overall titles during the event.

“Kenya is an athletics powerhouse and we want to stamp our authority. In Morocco in 2019, we finished fourth but this time, since we are hosting, we want to lift the overall title,” added Muema.

He said they will work with Athletics Kenya and the Ministry of Sports to host a world-class event.

“Kenya has in the past hosted world cross country and track and field events. We want to stage another successful event with the help of AK and the ministry,” noted Muema.

In 2007, Kenya hosted the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa while in 2017, the country staged the last World Under 18 Athletics Championships. In August, Kenya hosted the World Under 20 Championships at Moi Stadium, Kasarani.

Kenya has already announced it’s bid to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
