New dates for Nyamira Great Run Series announced

Nyamira North 10km will be held on October 29, according to Nyanza South Athletics Kenya chairman Peter Angwenyi

•The Nyamira North 10km race was rescheduled in honour of World 10,000 metres bronze medalist Agnes Tirop who was found dead in her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet county last week.

•The Manga sub-county cross country will be staged at Kiendege on November 12 with the Nyamira South 10kms taking place on November 19. 

The third edition of the Nyamira Great Run series which was supposed to take place over the weekend will now be held on October 29.

The Nyamira North 10km race was rescheduled in honour of world 10,000 metres bronze medalist, Agnes Tirop, who was found dead in her house in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet county last week.

“After consultations with our sponsors, the county government of Nyamira, we decided to postpone the race in solidarity with rest of the country in mourning the death of Tirop,” said Athletics Kenya (AK) Nyamira branch secretary, David Ogechi.

In a statement, Ogechi said: “We want to join the rest of the country in mourning  Tirop who was brutally murdered last week.”

AK last week announced the postponement of all their activities including AK Cross Country Series earlier scheduled for October 16 and 23 in Machakos and Iten respectively in honour of Tirop.

Following the latest postponement, new dates for the remaining races in the series have been announced. The Manga Sub County Cross County will be staged at Kiendege on November 12 with the Nyamira South 10km race  taking place on November 19. The race will start at Sironga and finish at Nyamira primary.

The final and main race of the series – the Nyamira 21km Great Run - will be held on December 13, a day after Jamhuri Day celebrations. “We decided to have it on December 13 because it will be a public holiday,” said Athletics Kenya Nyanza South chairman Peter Angwenyi.
