Hosts Kisii University will be seeking to defend the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) Western Conference athletics title this weekend.

Kisii University games tutor, David Obungu, exuded confidence that his charges will retain the men and women’s athletics titles which they won in 2019.

The games were not held last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Kisii will also be hoping to defend the men’s tug of war title.

“We have had good preparations. The men and women who will represent us have been training for the better part of the year and I’m happy they will finally be competing following the resumption of sports activities,” he added.

So far, six teams have confirmed participation with Obungu expecting more confirmations.

Those  already  confirmed are Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Kibabii University, Kabianga University, Kaimosi University, Rongo University, and hosts Kisii University.

“The biggest threats in our quest to defend our title will be from MMUST, Kibabii and Kabianga but we are ready for them,” said a confident Obungu.

He added that the university’s volleyball team which finished third in the recent KUSA play-off will take part in the 1st Heroes Community tournament at Koitalel Samoei University. “We shall field the men and women’s teams in the tournament’s university category. We have a very good men’s team,” added Obungu.

He further revealed that the university will field teams in soccer, handball, netball, table tennis, scrabble, badminton, and chess during Inter campuses sports tournament to be held at Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho.

Universities, clubs and colleges will pay a registration fee of Sh2,000 per discipline while schools will pay Sh1, 500, and Sh300 for indoor games. According to Kisii campus sports instructor Kennedy Ndemo, JKUAT’s seven campuses including the main campus, Nairobi CBD, Karen, Nakuru, Kitale, Kisii, and Kakamega have confirmed participation.

Other teams include Kisii Polytechnic, Ekerubo Gietai Technical, Keroka Technical, Sot Technical, Mawego Technical, Riokindo High, Tabaka High and Masosa secondary among others.
