Vihiga County Sport Fund kitty is set to be doubled from the current Sh30 million to Sh60 million, according to governor Wilberforce Ottichilo

The money will cater for the three clubs in the Kenya Premier league and other teams  in NSL and Division One.

“We are planning to double the Sports Fund in the coming supplementary budget. We want to set aside Sh60 million for our teams,” Ottichilo said.

The sports kitty was created after the Auditor General had raised queries to why Vihiga United and Vihiga Queens’ players were being paid by the county government yet they were not staff.

“What most people seem not to understand is why that kitty was created. We wanted to ensure we are compliant with the law,” Ottichilo said.

He said Vihiga county has embraced football, athletics and other sports and therefore needs more funding.

He said the county government is determined to upscale support for sportsmen and women by boosting the standards of sporting activities in the county.

“In the recent years,  we have taken sports seriously and we want to invest heavily in talent,” he added .

Vihiga Bullets were recently promoted to the top tier as Vihiga United slid back into the National Super League. Both Vihiga Queens and Bunyore Starlets are in the Women’s Premier League.

Ottichilo said his office will continue to give the necessary support to all clubs from the county in the country’s top competitions.

Vihiga Queens will represent Cecafa region in the inaugural CAF Women’s Club Champions League tournament scheduled to take place between November 5 - 19, 2021 in Egypt.

They will be up against AS FAR  (Morocco), AS Mand’e (Mali), Hasaacas Ladies (Ghana), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), River Angels (Nigeria), Wadi Delga (Egypt) and Maloba Ladies (Equatorial Guinea).

Ottichilo has promised the team Sh2 million if  they win the Caf tourney in Egypt.
