The national women's beach volleyball coach Sammy Mulinge says they have to improve on their reception if they are to overcome USA in their next match on Thursday.

Kenya's historic debut at the Tokyo Olympics began on a sour note after losing 2-0 to top ranked Brazil on Monday.

"We have lost against experienced opponents but the players have gained valuable lessons. The first set was not bad. We allowed them to control the game  by their strategy services which  minimised our chances of playing in the system. We have to work on reception  or we play second touch," Mulinge said.

Sets of 21-15 and 21-9 powered the South American pair of Rebecca Silva and Ana Patricia past  Gaudencia Makokha and Braxicedes Agala.

Kenya put up a spirited fight in the first set that lasted 18 minutes but inexperience proved costly in the form of poor reception.  Makokha recorded the fastest serve in the game of 56KM/H.

Brazil made light work of Kenya in the second set with their clever serves and devastating power attacks, which proved too much for the newbies.

With the set  only taking 13 minutes, Agala and Makokha only managed one block as opposed to four for the Brazilians.

Despite defeat, the tactician believes Kenya can still progress past the preliminary round provided they improve on their weaknesses and beat their remaining two opponents in Pool 'D'— USA and Latvia.

"The preliminary matches are still open.  We have to win the remaining matches in order to boost our chances for the second round. I believe we shall do better  in the remaining matches,"  he said.

The girls will have to display all the intricacies of the game which includes pace, power, vision and trickery going forward.

In another match, Canadians Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes, the reigning world champions, demolished Germany's Julia Suder and Karla Borger by the same scoreline in sets of 21-17 and 21-14.
