The last Athletics Kenya track and field weekend meeting will be held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County on April 4 and 5.

The meet was earlier scheduled for Moi Stadium, Kisumu.
In addition, a sprints clinic earlier scheduled for April 3 has also been shelved, according to Athletics Kenya Nyanza North chairman Joseph Ochieng.

“Being the last in a four-part series, we have decided to move it to a standard track. The Moi Stadium track is not standard and will not be ready to host the event,” Ochieng told the Star.

Ochieng, a World Athletics accredited race walk judge added: “JOOUST has all field implements and standard hurdles. We expect to host a successful event because we have already started making necessary arrangements.”

The first weekend meeting was held at the University of Eldoret while the second meet will be in Nairobi on March 5 and 6. The penultimate round will be staged in Embu on 21 and 22.

Meanwhile, Athletics Kenya Youth Committee will as from March 13 to 15 visit various schools in Nyanza North. The team is also likely to visit Nyanza South schools including Mogonga PAG, which is also a World Under 20 training camp.

“We have identified the schools which have sprinters who attended our camp at Sang'oro in December. The trip is aimed at building confidence with teachers and also giving them a training program for sprinters,” Ochieng said.

At the same time, Athletics Kenya Kisumu County vice chairman Gordon Apindi has died.

Ochieng said Apindi, a retired athlete, passed on on Tuesday in Kisumu after a short illness. Apindi, a retired teacher, was also a field coach and judge.

“He was very instrumental in training upcoming throwers. I take this opportunity to send a message of condolence to his family,” said Ochieng.
