Vikings coach Clyde Mmbaha has challenged his charges to fight for a return to the women's Premier League next season after receiving a two-year sponsorship deal from Bank of Africa.

A statement from the bank read in part: "Bank of Africa has committed to sponsoring the Vikings Ladies Hockey team for the next two years. Additionally, BoA is also looking at offering career and financial talks for the ladies to help them create a balanced life even as they undertake their sports and educational activities."

Mmbaha said the financial support from the bank will help the team improve its performances following a disastrous season. The team was relegated in 2017 to the Super League after a poor season coupled with financial constraints that bedevilled the club and they, in turn, lost many players.

He said: "We want to thank them for being magnanimous. Our aim is to get back to the Premier League first before we can think of fighting for honours. The players need to raise their game to make this dream a reality. This financial package will ensure that the girls will not be undermined. They will focus on the game and keep themselves away from vices such as drug abuse."

Vikings Hockey club are seventh in the eight-team league, safe from relegation.

They have nine points from 12 matches — winning twice, drawing thrice and losing seven times. Mmbaha added that the financial package will restore belief in the players and they are looking forward to a fruitful season.

He said: "The girls will play confidently. We can't wait to get the new season started."

Vikings will hope to impress in their remaining two matches against Orange Leonas and Multimedia University. The 2020 season starts in February.
