Migori and Kenyenya ended Asumbi’s quest for a clean sweep during the Nyanza Region Teachers Training Colleges ball games that ended in Kisii yesterday.

Kenyenya won the women’s soccer title while Migori clinched the men’s soccer and netball titles to deny Asumbi a clean sweep during the three-day championships held at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho. Last year, Asumbi won all the 12 titles at the regional games. In men’s soccer, Migori edged Nyanchwa 2-0 to lift the title.

Migori had earlier in the semis eliminated holders Asumbi 1-0 while Nyanchwa edged Kenyenya 3-2 on post-match penalties. Reagan Otodo, the Migori coach said: “Asumbi had beaten us in three consecutive finals. We had to go to the drawing board. I’m happy we have won and now we are targeting the national glory.”

In the women’s soccer, Kenyenya beat Migori 2-1 on post-match penalties to lift their maiden regional title after playing to a barren draw after extra time. During the dramatic shoot-outs, Caroline Atuti and Erivy Nicholas scored for Kenyenya while Agneta Chelimo scored Migori’s lone penalty. Kenyenya goalkeeper Damacline Ouru saved two penalties.

In the semis, Migori beat arch-rivals Asumbi 2-1 while Kenyenya saw off newcomers Borabu 2-1. In the play off, Asumbi edged Borabu 3-0. Migori won all their matches including  a comfortable 25-6 win over holders Asumbi to lift the men’s netball title. They garnered 12 points from four games and were closely followed by Asumbi with 9 points while Kenyenya finished third with six points.

Asumbi retained both the men’s and women’s volleyball titles. Asumbi beat Migori 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-11) to lift the men’s volleyball title. Asumbi had beaten Angelic in straight sets while Migori edged Rachuonyo 3-0. In the women’s category, Asumbi came from a set down to beat Kenyenya 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-14) in a tough final.
