ODM has chosen Dr Brian Lishenga to be its candidate in the Kakamega senator race.

Lishenga will face Boni Khalwale and either Patrick Butichi, Douglas Shamala or Winfred Asiko of DAP-K on August 9.

The party settled on him after a consensus brokered by deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya on Sunday.

The other two aspirants, Dr Simbauni Ndombi and businessman Benjamin Andama, agreed to drop their bids.

"After lengthy deliberations and negotiations with three ODM aspirants for the Kakamega senatorial seat, we have reached a consensus that Dr Lishenga will fly the party's ticket," Oparanya announced.

"I take this opportunity to thank Dr Ndombi and Andama for voluntarily shelving their political ambitions in favour of Dr Lishenga."

Lishenga, a medical doctor, is former Rural Private Hospitals Association of Kenya chairman and has previously served as Dean of Medicine at Egerton University.

Oparanya said consensus is provided for in the party's constitution as one way of arriving at candidates.

He said the negotiation process was not easy and thanked Ndombi and Andama for showing political maturity and saving the party the nomination expenses and possible fallout.

The governor said no one was coerced to drop his bid.

Oparanya announced that Ndombi had been appointed coordinator of Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga's campaigns in the county and Andama will deputise him.

He also said Fernandes Baraza and Elsie Muhanda will get direct tickets for the governor and woman representative positions.

The three will receive their nomination certificates at Orange House in Nairobi on Wednesday.

"Candidates for the MCA positions will not have to travel to Nairobi for nomination tickets because they will be issued with the documents in Kakamega next week," Oparanya said.

The governor said he is confident that ODM had come up with a formidable team that will deliver the seats in August.
