Husbands are killing their families, youth abusing substances and cheating on exams, and girls lured into premarital sex with free meals in Kisii.

Kisii Catholic Bishop Joseph Mairura has called out the society for these and many other sins.

“Life is precious, that is why I am appealing to husbands to stop killing their wives or children. They need to use dialogue in solving problems," he said.

Mairura was at Nyambera Primary School in Kisii town on Saturday to celebrate the annual diocesan youth mass.

He said it is not right for husbands to cut the limbs and ears of their wives just because they have quarrelled.

Mairura urged couples to talk out problems.

He urged the youths to shun drug and illicit liquor abuse, saying the habit leads to violence and ruins lives.

“We have violent children who bully their colleagues because they abuse drugs and alcohol. I am urging parents to take their parental responsibilities seriously by guiding their children,” the prelate said.

He said many families are suffering and many children have dropped out of school as a result of substance abuse.

Mairura, who was accompanied by a number of priests and nuns, urged girls to shun free meals.

It is a trap, which leads to unwanted pregnancies, and ruins your education and lives, he said.

The bishop urged girls to focus on their education and look for a life partner at the right time.

He also criticised young people who hire people to sit national exams for them.

“You go to school, do not take your studies seriously and then end up hiring someone to sit an examination for you. Do not embrace that,” Mairura said.

Father Joseph Otomu said the bishop could not conduct the mass for two years – 2020 and 2021 – due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

He said the mass will be held annually as was the case before.
