Security at the industrial park in Naivasha has been heightened after a fence around the facility was vandalised.
The park hosts the inland container depot where goods worth billions of shillings pass through every day.
More than 80 per cent of the fence around the park in Mai Mahiu, which was erected a few months ago, has been destroyed.
A fortnight ago, Kenya Railways started a two-month trial of seamlessly ferrying goods from Mombasa through ICD to Malaba by rail.
Naivasha deputy county commissioner Mutua Kisilu said,“We have formed a multi-agency team to inspect and secure all government infrastructure to deal with cases of vandalism.”
“We are disturbed by the vandalism of the fence. We have launched investigations and anyone involved will face the law,” Kisilu warned.
He further said water pipes and tanks in Naivasha town and its suburbs are also being vandalised.
Kisilu said this has affected water supply and sewer systems in the town.
Last month, the Olkaria-Lessos-Kisumu, Kiambere-Embakassi and Loiyangalani-Suswa high voltage power lines were vandalised, plunging parts of the country into darkness.
He said all the towers that had been vandalised had been repaired and a contractor was on site to fill underground tunnels left behind by sand harvesters.
“As we address the challenges facing the towers, KETRACO should also make sure that all families affected by the power lines are compensated to heal the current enmity,” Kisilu said.
The deputy commissioner said they will engage members of the public in protecting critical power towers and lines.
“We have banned sand harvesting along power lines. Two suspects have been fined Sh2 million for vandalism and we have heightened surveillance along the power lines,” he said.
