Two motorcycle operators died on Monday while three other people were slightly injured in two separate accidents in Naivasha.

This came as police announced a major road safety awareness campaign targeting the operators due to an increase in fatal accidents.

In the first accident, a motorcycle operator and his passenger were hit by a matatu along the Moi South Lake road on Monday evening near Simba Lodge.

The operator died on the spot while the passenger was seriously injured and taken to Naivasha Subcounty Hospital in critical condition.

A witness, Sam Waithaka, said the motorcycle was overtaking a trailer when it rammed into the oncoming matatu.

He said on impact, the operator was thrown under the matatu which ran over him while the passenger crashed by the roadside.

“The motorcycle operator is to blame for the accident as he decided to overtake without checking if there was an incoming vehicle,” he said.

In the second accident, another operator died on the spot after hitting a Nissan matatu along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

During the accident near Delamere farm, three passengers in a Nakuru bound matatu escaped with minor injuries.

The operator, who was alone, was joining the highway from one of the feeder roads when he was hit by the matatu and died on the spot.

Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said both bodies had been taken to the local mortuary.

He said initial investigations in both cases pointed to speeding and careless overtaking which had become the norm among some of the operators.

“We shall be launching a road safety campaign targeting these operators as the number of fatal accidents involving them is worrying,” he said.
