- The education office had finalized arrangements to have all the candidates from areas that were recently affected by terror attacks moved to other safer exam centers across the county.
This year’s KCPE and KCSE exam candidates from terror prone areas in Lamu will be evacuated to safer locations where they will sit their national examinations.
This is according to the Lamu county department of education.
Lamu county director for Education Joshua Kaaga said the education office had finalised arrangements to have all the candidates from areas that were recently affected by terror attacks moved to other safer exam centres across the county.
At least 15 people were confirmed dead between January 2 and 9 following a spate of terror attacks by suspected al Shabaab militia in Widho, Juhudi, Salama, Marafa, Mashogoni, Pandanguo, Bobo-Sunkia, Milihoi, Kibokoni, Boni forest villages and surrounding areas.
Scores others were displaced as a result of the raids.
Speaking on Thursday, Kaaga said most schools in terror prone areas have a small number of candidates which will be easily merged with fellow candidates from other examination centres that are generally considered safe.
The KCPE exam candidates at Pandanguo Primary School in Lamu West have been moved to Witu Primary School, about 20km away.
Candidates from Juhudi and Salama primary schools in remote areas of Lamu West have also been merged and transferred to Holy Angels Primary School close to Mpeketoni town.
Kaaga said the county education office was working closely with the Interior Ministry and that enough sSchool on the Lamu-Somalia border to ensure exams proceed smoothly.
“For instance, Kiunga Primary School on the border is a major examination centre in Lamu and has its own exam container. We have police officers manning the centre plus many other security arrangements in the area,” Kaaga said.
A total of 1,828 candidates, 1,005 boys and 823, are sitting their KCPE exams in Lamu county.
Another 3,620 candidates—1,845 boys and 1,816 girls—are sitting their KCSE exam in Lamu this year.
