Laikipia Woman Rep Catherine Waruguru has asked the National Security Council to remain vigilant over rising political intolerance being witnessed in the country.

Speaking at her Nanyuki town office on Tuesday, Waruguru condemned the incident where supporters of Deputy President William Ruto were confronted and harassed at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday.

She said security agencies in the country were aware of the organised criminal gangs that almost disrupted the UDA meeting.

The MP called for thorough investigation and arrest of the culprits.

The legislator also asked the international community, through the National Security Council, to caution the top leadership of the country against looking like they are being entertained by retrogressive politics which violate the constitutional rights of Kenyans.

Waruguru said it is the right of every Kenyan to assemble, associate and elect leaders of their choice.

“People are free to assemble and choose political parties of their choice. The government would not rejoice if we were making steps backward,” the MP said.

The legislator further said the government should not purport to be ‘selling’ Azimio la Umoja, while at the same time trampling on the rights of its opponents.

She said the state knows the organised criminal gangs and can eliminate them if it has goodwill.

“Raila Odinga came here in Laikipia county and we did not witness any stone-throwing. Why are we seeing some of these scenarios in some places?”

Waruguru added that during the Jacaranda event at Embakasi East, the Deputy President was humiliated, and only a few police officers surrounded him to play public relations.

She challenged the government to deal with the gangs just as it does with al Shabaab militants and other evil elements in the society.
