MET'S WARNING

Lasting solutions will protect families in flood-prone areas

State should also provide basic needs to affected families

In Summary

• For long, the most affected counties have been Turkana, Tana River, Garissa, Isiolo, Kisumu, Taita, Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, West Pokot,  Mombasa, Samburu and Narok.

• In flood-prone areas, index-based microinsurance pools the risks and resources of whole groups, making insurance available.

In light of the havoc that heavy rains are inducing across the country, the Met’s warning that there shall be sustained rains amid strong southeasterly winds across most parts of the country is stunning.

Floods have displaced scores of families and killed thousands of livestock across the country. The state should provide assistance to the families including shelter, food, water and medicine.

There is a need for preparedness for crises. Natural water retention methods like reforestation play a valuable part in deterring floods.
