The debate over whether to impeach four IEBC commissioners who rejected the presidential election result threatens to tear the country apart.

The four commissioners – Juliana Cherera (vice chairperson), Justus Nyang'aya, Irene Masit and Francis Wanderi – have been accused of being sympathetic to the opposition.

They rejected the results of the August 9 presidential election, moments before the chairman declared William Ruto the winner.

Chairman Wafula Chebukati, and commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye, believed to be pro-government, are set to retire on January 19, 2023, after serving for six years.

The Constitution provides for the chairman and commissioners of IEBC to serve for a six-year non-renewable term.

The four commissioners took office in September 2021 and are scheduled to exit in September 2027, after the general election, if they serve their full terms.

The planned impeachment of the four is marred by all sorts of claims, therefore, it is important that the law is followed strictly in dealing with them.

The government should do the honourable thing and allow the four commissioners to retire after the expiry of their terms.

This will ensure that the country is not divided along political lines and the rule of law of upheld since it is a strong pillar of democracy.
