THERE was tight security yesterday at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri county, as more than 200 police recruits who were reporting for training were turned away.

Armed police officers took up strategic positions at Kiganjo on the Nyeri–Chaka road.

The recruits were kept at bay at about two kilometres away.

The recruits were from as far as Bomet, Leiten, Isiolo, Kericho, Meru and Nairobi.

They arrived carrying their mattresses, clothes and brooms only to be warned that they should not be seen near the college.

The recruits, who had admission letters they received last year, said they were obeying the executive order by President Uhuru Kenyatta to report for training.

After the Garissa University College attack on April 2, Uhuru said all the 10,000 cadets whose recruitment was stopped by the High Court over corruption allegations could report for training.

However, last week the President rescinded the order and ordered fresh recruitment.

A parent, Elijah Mugambi, from Isiolo county, said he had sold a goat to get bus fare for his daughter only to be turned away.

A recruit, Eric Njoroge, from Nairobi, said he is about to pass the recommended age of 28 and he might not qualify for the next recruitment scheduled for April 20.

The parents demanded to know who is superior than the President.

They said Kenya National Police Service Commission chairman Johnston Kavuludi, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett have defied the President.
