The government has signed an MoU with the Korean government to foster and promote partnerships and investments in the development of smart cities in the country.

The MoU will see the two countries construct at least 5,000 affordable homes in Mavoko, Machakos and the Tatu City Special Economic Zone.

It will further provide the development of a smart city framework and seek to establish a smart mobility system encompassing a smart transportation network which will use smart driving licenses.

The mobility plans are expected to meet the urban functions of the Konza Technopolis.

Speaking on Monday during the ongoing 3rd Kenyan International Investment Conference (KIICO), PS John Tanui reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to urban development and the importance of designing sustainable infrastructure.

During the ‘Investing in Smart Cities’ session of the event, the PS said that the development will be made possible through the existing legal and regulatory frameworks Kenya has put in place.

“We’re keen to see that the urban development of smart cities is well guided. The Kenyan government has laid a very robust enabling environment to spur its digital economy,” the Principal Secretary State Department for ICT and Digital Economy said.

The Korean Trade Centre (KOTRA) managing director Eom IK-Hyun said that Korea shared similar interests with Kenya when it comes to Smart Cities.

“Kenya and Korea have the same interests and today we share the interest to be smart cities,” he said.

Last year Kenya signed an MoU with the Korean government seeking to establish core partnerships between the two states in the development of ICT at Konza Technopolis.

In October 2022 following the signing of the MoU, Eom said the Korean government will support Kenya and expressed its commitment to work with the Ruto-led administration.
