Azimio la Umoja coalition has the right to hold peaceful protests against the government but within the confines of the law.

This is according to Constitutional lawyer Bobby Mkangi.

Mkangi says under Article 37 of Kenya's 2010 Constitution, every person has the right, to peaceably and unarmed, assemble, demonstrate,  picket, and present petitions to public authorities.

He notes that even though the Constitution allows citizens to hold demonstrations committing unlawful activities like destroying property could lead to arrest.

‘‘You risk being arrested as an individual if you conflict with the law as you participate in the demonstrations. committing unlawful activities as a mob will mean you carry your own cross as an individual. The law only allows peaceful demonstrations," he said.

‘‘Picketing should not affect other people’s rights negatively, if someone wishes to continue with their day-to-day life like going to work, going to school or going on with their business.’’

Speaking to the Star on Monday, Mkangi further notes that the investigatory services using cameras can identify individuals committing unlawful activities leading to their arrest and charging them in court.

ODM leader Raila Odinga wants to lead protestors to State House, Nairobi to present their petition to President William Ruto.

In Kisumu and Nairobi Central Business District, businesses remained closed with minimal activity as police engaged protesters in running battles while arresting others.

The protestors want President Ruto’s government to lower the cost of living, and prices of commodities, among others.
