Wildlife and Tourism Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza has said the ministry plans to build more Meeting Incentives Conventions and Exhibition Centres.

Malonza said the MICE sector has shown improvement over the last year.

"It has accounted for 27.2  per cent of the total arrival of tourists in the country compared to 13.5 per cent in 2019," Malonza said.

She said the ministry plans to build a new convention centre in Nairobi through Public Private Partnerships.

Malonza said a convention centre is already under construction in Kisumu.

She said they are the third highest contributor of tourists in the country before tourists who come for holidays and those who come to visit family and friends.

"We are going to do a lot of promotion of MICE events and festivals to enhance the capacity of hosting," Malonza said.

Malonza spoke while giving the 2022 Tourism performance report in Nairobi on Wednesday.

She said the country can hold big international events and conferences but is limited due to inadequate convention centres.

The CS said more convention centres will be built to allow the country to host international meetings.

Malonza said the number of international delegates increased from 3,341 in 2021 to 18,658 in 2022.

"While for local delegates, it more than doubled from 87,444 in 2021 to 203,336 in 2022," she said.
