- Amnesty International Kenya said in a statement that they had recorded 31 bodies retrieved from the river.
- They said that another body was also recovered on the morning of January 22 and more might still turn up.
The number of bodies recovered from River Yala is yet to be conclusive.
Various rights groups recorded contrasting numbers.
Amnesty International Kenya said in a statement that they had recorded 31 bodies retrieved from the river.
“We can confirm that the bodies were dumped and retrieved from the river between July 2021 and January 2022,” they said.
They said that another body was also recovered on the morning of January 22 and more might still turn up.
This, they said, was discovered after completing a fact-finding mission to the area around River Yala after recording the 31 retrieved bodies.
“Further investigation is required to reconcile the numbers documented by human rights defenders (31), Yala Hospital Morgue (21) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (19)," they said.
They called on state to ratify and implement the International Convention on the Prevention of all Enforced disappearances for national and international accountability.
“In addition, we demand the establishment of the missing and deceased persons database to preserve DNA and other evidence,” they said.
They also called on Parliament to commission a joint parliamentary inquiry into the rising cases of abductions, forced disappearances and the dumping of bodies in our rivers, forests and parks.
“Yala and Siaya must not be the dumping grounds for murderers and these murderers must be apprehended swiftly,” they concluded.
