Older women more prone to sexual violence — survey

Women still experienced more sexual violence at 13% than men at 7%

Older women have been found to be more prone to sexual violence compared to younger women.

According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey of 2022, the number of women aged 15 to 49 who have experienced sexual violence is higher among older women.

"In the age group 40 to 49 years, 18 per cent of women had experienced sexual violence while seven per cent of men had experienced the same," the survey said.

In the age group 30 to 39 years, the survey shows 15 per cent of women and eight per cent of men had experienced sexual violence.

In the age group 25 to 29, it was 13 per cent for women and eight per cent of men.

"The age group of 20 to 24 years  recorded 11 per cent of women and eight per cent of men had experienced sexual violence," the survey shows.

In the youngest age group, seven per cent of girls and five per cent of boys had experienced sexual violence.

"In general, 13 per cent of women and seven per cent of men between the ages of 15 and 49 had experienced sexual violence," the survey shows.
