Only 38,972 candidates out of those who sat the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education(KCPE) will join the country's 103 National Schools.

Following the conclusion of the Form One selection, students are expected to report between February 6 and 13.

The Ministry of Education said they should be captured in the National Education Management Information System by March 2.

According to the Ministry of Education data on Form One selection, all the pupils who scored 400 marks and above will join the National Schools and Extra County schools of their choice.

Of the 38,972 candidates joining National Schools, 20,178 will be boys while the remaining 18,794 will be girls.

In the 2022 KCPE results, a total of 9,443 candidates scored 400 marks and above while 307,756 scored between 300 and 399 marks.

The Form One Selection data shows that over 29,000 pupils who scored less than 400 marks have also been admitted to national schools based on affirmative action.

“The placement was based on choice, merit and availability of places,” said Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.

The data shows that a total of 228, 160 of which 117,055 will be male and 111,105 female-will join the various Extra-county schools.

The Education Ministry said following the selection, 270 students from slums areas were placed in National and Extra County Schools of their choice.

“This was in addition to those who were placed through merit and other criteria,” Machogu said when he released the election results on Monday.

Another cohort of 199,027 candidates who sat for KCPE last year will join County Schools with 91,566 being male while 107,461 are female.

Sub-county schools, mainly Day Schools, will carry the biggest burden with 762,610.

Out of this, 387,203 are male while 372,459 are female.

'The Special Needs Education candidates were also placed in the regular schools of their preference, while others were placed in special schools based on their disability categories on merit and choice,” said Machogu.

There was a total of 1,819 Special Needs Candidates of which 948 were male while 871 were female.

The government also placed a total of 9,019 learners from primary schools based in the refugee camps in public secondary schools.

This was in line with the 2017 Djibouti declaration on Regional Refugee Education.

It stipulates the need to enhance the capacity of the IGAD member state to implement commitments to quality education and learning for refugees and host communities.
