Mary Njoroge is the only Kenyan match official selected by the world football governing body-Fifa for the 2023 women’s World Cup.

In a list shared by Fifa, Njoroge has been picked as one of the 55 assistant referees in the tournament.

The selection is made by the Fifa Referees committee.

The competition will jointly be hosted by Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

It will be the first to feature an expanded format of 32 teams, from the previous 24, replicating the same format used for the men's World Cup.

There are 33 other referees and support referees and 19 video match officials.

Other Africans picked as centre referees are Vincentia Amedome, Bouchra Karboubi, Salima Mukansanga and Akhona Makalima.

The selection is based on the highest level of refereeing.

"As always, the criteria we have used is 'quality first' and the selected on-field match officials represent the highest level of refereeing worldwide," chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina is quoted saying in an international sports bulletin.
