ICT industry players meet to discuss 2023 data governance plans

The conference comes three years after the enactment of the Data Protection Act.

Industry players on Tuesday gathered at the Movenpick hotel to review the implementation progress and impact of the Data Protection Act to offer priority actions for the deepening of data governance in 2023. 

They comprised government agencies, the Office of Data protection commissioner, civil society and the ICT sector and industry players

The data governance conference was organized by Amnesty International Kenya. 

The conference comes three years after the enactment of the Data Protection Act.

“The increase in our ICT has subsequently led to the collection of a huge volume of data that is used to make key financial marketing decisions,” ICT CS Eliud Owalo said

“As such the need to strengthen the legal framework that governs the processing of data.” 

Owalo said there is a need for systematic regulation of data processing. 

He urged the private and public sectors to take advantage of the growing ICT sector to spur economic growth in the country. 

“We want to professionalise training of data protection laws in the country,” data commissioner Immaculate Kassait said

According to an opinion poll by Amnesty International, 67 per cent of Kenyans were unaware of the data protection act and 82 per cent were unaware of the office of data commissioner in 2021.

They said public awareness of data protection remains low.
