IEBC Four lose hefty benefits hours after suspension

They no longer have state-chauffeured luxury vehicles and security.

The four suspended electoral agency commissioners have lost hefty perks moment after they were kicked out by President William Ruto.

They were entitled to lucrative benefits while serving as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioners.

Following their suspension on Friday, the four lost their official transport and security, consequently coming ordinary citizens.

President Ruto on Friday suspended IEBC vice chair Juliana Cherera, and commissioners Justus Nyang’aya, Francis Wanderi and Irine Masit.

In a gazette notice on Friday, the President said their suspension was effective immediately. 

Commissioners of the IEBC are entitled to high-end vehicles chauffeured by drivers paid for by taxpayers as well as at least three bodyguards each.

As full-time constitutional commissions they were provided with an official car of engine capacity not exceeding 3000cc.

They also have security officers attached to city residences and their rural homes.

On Friday, the Star understands, officers assigned to them were recalled and their official vehicles returned as the President gazetted a tribunal to try them.

They will, however, during the 30-day trial by the Aggrey Muchelule-led tribunal, be entitled to half their basic salary without any other allowances.

The benefits the four IEBC Commissioners lost.

The IEBC vice chairperson and members of the commission earn a basic salary of sh 459, 113 with Sh150,000 as House Allowance.

They also get sh156, 075 as Salary Market Adjustment, taking their gross pay to sh 761, 488 per month.

Medical Benefit:

They enjoy an annual in-patient medical cover of Sh 10 million including for their spouses and up to four children below twenty-five years fully dependent on them.

They also had Sh 300,000 Maternity, Sh150,000 Dental and Sh75,000 Optical.

Retirement Benefit:

If they were to serve their full-term of six years, they would have been eligible to a service gratuity at the rate of 31 per cent of the annual pensionable emoluments for the term served.

Group Life Insurance: They were entitled to a cover for a value equivalent to three times of the annual gratuity emoluments.

Group Personal Accident: A State officers, they also enjoyed a cover for a value equivalent to three times of the annual gratuity emoluments.

Car Loan and Mortgage Benefit: They enjoyed Sh6 million car loan and a mortgage of up to Sh30 million.

They were entitled to a Subsistence Allowance for local and foreign travels as set by the SRC.

They were entitled to a monthly airtime allowance of sh15,000 and an Annual Leave Allowance of Sh50,000.
