Azimio picks Gedi, Raila cousin for top CRA jobs

They will now be vetted by Parliament before taking up their positions.

Ex-Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi and ODM boss Raila Odinga's cousin George Midiwo have been picked for top Commission on Revenue Allocation jobs.

 

In a notice by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, the two were picked by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition to represent the minority in Parliament.

While Gedi lost in the elections to become a member of the East African Legislative Assembly, Midiwo applied but was not shortlisted by Azimio.

This is a big win for Gedi who lost in her bid to defend the Wajir county seat in the last election despite being a key Azimio bigwig.

It is also a consolation for the Jubilee party, a member of the Azimio coalition which had been allocated two slots.

The nominees will now be vetted by the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning before their names are tabled before the National Assembly plenary for approval or rejection.

"The House on Tuesday November 29, 2022 I shall convey the names to the assembled House," Wetangula said in his communication.

Those picked by  Kenya Kwanza Alliance are Benedict Muasya Mutiso, Wilfred Koitamet Ole Kina, Vincent Kuko, Isabel Nyambura and Hadija Juma 

According to Article 215 of the Constitution, Political Parties nominated seven CRA commissioners.

The minority gets two slots while the majority party has five.

Parliament is expected to process the nominees ahead of December 31 when the terms of the current commissioners expire.

According to the nomination criteria, two members are nominated by the political parties to represented the National Assembly based on the numerical strength.

Five persons are nominated by political parties represented in the Senate – also according to their proportion.

The chairperson is nominated by the President and approved by the National Assembly.

The Treasury Principal Secretary who also sits at the commission.

Allies of Ruto and Raila had dominate the list of 139 persons who applied to join the commission through the Senate.

They also featured in the 37 who applied in the case of the National Assembly.
