Safaricom Ethiopia’s 2G, 3G and 4G network will be available in 16 cities.

This was the first joint investment project to be realised under the strategic alliance agreed by Vodafone and Sumitomo in November 2020.

Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO, said the firm's board in Kenya is actively supporting the Ethiopian management to ensure that the telco sets up a strong foundation.

Ndegwa also acknowledged the milestones mentioned by Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Anwar Soussa, adding that the efforts will contribute to the country’s telecommunications reforms.

In 2021, as part of plans to revamp the telecommunications sector, Ethiopia issued a tender to award two licences to private telecommunication operators.

One licence was awarded to a consortium led by Safaricom, which offered $850 million and promised to invest $8.5 million over 10 years.

Speaking during the firm's half-year result,  Ndegwa said the Ethiopian entity generated Sh98.3 million in the first month of operation.

The Ethiopian service revenue for the period ended September 30 was Sh9.1 million.
