The Kenya Redcross Society has warned Kenyans against mushrooming fake humanitarian aid Paybill numbers, doing the rounds on social media.

The society, which is part of the teams leading drought response measures, asked Kenyans to be wary of fraudsters out to con them.

The fake PayBill numbers have been circulating with the society's logo on social media asking Kenyans to donate towards drought response.

"We would like to caution members of the public against falling victim to such fraudsters who are out to exploit the unfortunate drought situation that has left over 4.35 million Kenyans in need of support," said Peter Abwao, the Public Relations and Communication manager of the society.

The society clarified that the only legitimate pay bill number they have is 10000 with account name: Drought.

"Members of the public who wish to support the society's drought response are welcome to do so through the given pay bill number," said Abwao.

The society also flagged as fake a letter allegedly appealing for donations to starving Kenyans.

The fake letter, which did not have a Kenya Red Cross stamp had a bank account where well-wishers were being asked to channel their contributions.

The Red Cross has not given any bank account for people to channel any money, the society said.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for contributions from Kenyans to help those in the drought-stricken areas.

The government has scaled up response measures to mitigate the impact of the drought that is ravaging at least 22 counties.
