Kenyan teen sensation, Angela Okutoyi had a flying start to the US Open Junior girls' singles campaign, after seeing off German Carolina Kuhl in the first round on Sunday.

Okutoyi secured straight sets of 7-6, 7-5 to book a berth in the second round.

It was the second time the duo was flexing muscles, having first met in October 2021 during the JA Cape Town in South Africa where the German won 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.

The Kenyan will now face Australian Taylah Preston who cruised past American Alyssa Ahn.

Preston began her challenge on a positive note, after recording a 6-0 win in the first set.

However, the American rallied gallantly from behind to win the second set 6-3 before Preston rose to the occasion once again to win the final set 6-1.

Heading into her match, Okutoyi said she would be eyeing a quarter-finals slot to emulate her achievement in Australia where she managed a third-round finish.

Okutoyi opened a new chapter in history by becoming the first Kenyan to be crowned champion at a Grand Slam event.

On June 20, Okutoyi and her partner Rose Marie Nijkamp from the Netherlands beat Canadians Kayla Cross and Victoria Mboko 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 in the final of the Wimbledon Open doubles Junior Championships at the grass courts of All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Then on September 3, she partnered with Pole Malwina Rowinska to clinch the J1 Repentigny Doubles at Larochelle Park in Canada.
