President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that people from the Mt Kenya region were duped into turning against him.

Without mentioning names, Uhuru sympathised with residents from the larger Central Kenya region whom he said were easily persuaded by a section of political leaders to turn against him.

"My people in Mt Kenya were duped to believe that my plan to bring the one man one shilling rule was about me. They were told to hate me but now I will be hanging out with my grand kids while the problem remains unresolved," Uhuru said.

He added that due to their 'foolishness', he may not be able to help them.

Uhuru spoke Saturday night in an interview with Kikuyu media stations.

He said he always put the interests of the country above personal gains then entire period he has been president.

Deputy President William Ruto appears to enjoy overwhelming support in the vote-rich Mount Kenya region.

With Uhuru's retirement after Tuesday's elections, the closest the Mt Kenya region will be at the center of power is if the Azimio team whose running mate Martha Karua comes from the region wins the polls.

This partly explains why the leading presidential contenders contenders picked running mates from the region in a bid to woo the region's voters to their side.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's final voters’ register shows that Mount Kenya and Rift Valley regions have the highest number of registered voters.

Rift Valley, which has 14 counties, has 5.3 million registered voters, while the 10 counties that form the Mount Kenya region have 5.7 million voters.

Some of the counties from the Mt Kenya region with high number of voters include Kiambu with 1,275,008 voters, Meru (772,139), Murang’a (620,929), Nyeri (481,632), Nyandarua (361,165), Kirinyaga (376,001), Laikipia (263,012), Tharaka-Nithi (231,932) and Embu (334,302).

Appearing to be the most largely homogenous political bloc and assumed to be the single biggest vote basket, both Raila and DP Ruto's choice of running mates had to come from the mountain.

Ruto settled on Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua.
