• Uhuru had efended the handshake with Raila saying he made the pact for the sake of Kenya's peace.
In his entire ten-year rule as President, Uhuru Kenyatta worked to ensure Kenya remains a peaceful country.
The President said this while speaking to vernacular Media outlets on Sunday night at State House.
He said that he has been the biggest advocate for peace even before he got to the presidency.
"In my first attempt to run for the presidency in 2002, Kibaki beat me in the elections and I conceded defeat. If I wasn't a peace-loving man, I wouldn't have accepted it," he noted.
"I landed in the Opposition and there was peace in Kenya," Uhuru added.
In the 2002 general elections, the late Mwai Kibaki won in a landslide victory in the presidential race.
Uhuru, his closest rival, was Moi's preferred successor.
In March 2018, Uhuru and his long-time political rival Raila Odinga agreed to put aside their differences and work together.
This was after the country was thrown into turmoil following the disputed 2017 presidential elections which Raila claimed were rigged.
The truce, popularly known as the handshake, did not, however, sit well with his Deputy William Ruto and brought division in the country's political field.
Uhuru, however, defended the handshake saying he made the pact for the sake of Kenya's peace.
He called out his deputy for claiming that he was not involved in the handshake saying the DP was aware of the pact all along.
The President said that it was hypocritical for DP to claim that he was not part of the handshake yet he consulted him about it.
"Saying that I didn't inform him (Ruto) about the handshake is hypocritical."
Uhuru further clarified that the handshake wasn't a ploy to share government positions as claimed by its critics but was rather meant to bring peace in the country.
Uhuru said he put the country above anything else and chose peace over power.
"During the pre-handshake period, there was no peace because we had demonstrations almost every day. Why would I let a country go towards that direction when we can sit and get to an understanding?" he posed.
Uhuru will leave office after the country holds the general election on Tuesday.
