Kipsigis Girls High School has been closed indefinitely after more than 1,000 students went on the rampage.

The students were angered by the transfer of their principal Juliana Kirui.

Kirui swapped places with Moi Girls principal Christine Chumba before the Kipsigis students staged the strike on Sunday morning.

Kericho county Teachers Service Commission director Grace Mwangi confirmed the closure of the school after the strike.

Mwangi however dismissed as untrue claims that the girls were opposed to the transfer of Kirui to Moi Girls Eldoret with Chumba taking over as the new principal at Kipsigis Girls High School.

“The girls went on strike to protest poor diet being offered by the school and not the transfer of Mrs Kirui,” Mwangi said.

The director said the transfer of Kirui to Eldoret was normal.

The students walked to Kericho town, some three kilometers from the school, during the protest.

It forced the school administration to close the institution.

The girls did not destroy school property during the demonstration.
