COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli is a great critic of Deputy President William and has always opposed his 2022 presidential aspiration.

Atwoli has declared several times in public that Ruto will not be the president come 2022 general elections, adding that his name will not be on the ballot papers.

Recently, Atwoli said that said UDA party which is associated with the DP is a political party that will serve in the opposition adding that Ruto is not going to win the election.

“Take it from me. I am a just man of God. He will not win elections. If you are to win and you are working with someone who is ahead of you, support this person until the end,” Atwoli said.

But even after such remarks against the DP, a post on social media purported that Atwoli recognised the campaign strategy of the DP.

The fake post said that:

“Deputy President is a serious mobilizer. He has prepared himself so well and if the president does not move in to contain him, I think we will just have to accept him as our next president.”

Hours later after the post was circulated, Atwoli dismissed it, saying that he has not changed his stand.

“I have already pronounced myself on the candidature of William Ruto. Ruto is not going to be President. His bloggers should stop using my name for legitimacy purposes.,” Atwoli said.

Also, the post is fake, saying that the president should move with speed to stop the DP from exercising his democratic rights.

According to the Constitution of Kenya, a person qualifies for nomination as a presidential candidate if the person: Is a citizen by birth, is qualified to stand for election as a member of Parliament; is nominated by a political party, or is an independent candidate; and is nominated by not fewer than two thousand voters from each of a majority of the counties.

The person can also be barred from running for the top seat if that person owes allegiance to a foreign state.

This means that the incumbent president has no power to stop someone from contesting for the top seat but can in one way or another support a preferred aspirant in order to bring down a certain individual from winning.
