African Union Commission chairperson Moussa Faki has said that he is closely monitoring the situation in Tunisia.
In a statement on Tuesday, Faki said that he reached out to the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs through phone where they talked about the situation.
Chaos erupted in Tunisia as irate citizens took to the streets to protest the government’s mishandling of the coronavirus.
President Kais Saied sacked Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, and suspended parliament indefinitely as violent protests spread across the country.
Calling for restoration of normalcy, Faki expressed the commitment of AUC to the strict respect of the Tunisian constitution, the necessary maintenance of peace, and the rejection of all forms of violence.
He has also urged Tunisian leaders to consider the promotion of political dialogue to resolve the problems at hand, and the need to respond to the legitimate aspirations of the Tunisian people, especially its youth.
On Monday, during a phone call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, president Saied affirmed his commitment to respect the legitimacy, rights, and freedoms of citizens.
Saied also extended his gratitude and appreciation to the US government following the donation of 310 cylinders containing one million liters of oxygen to support efforts against Covid.
There were celebrations following the news of the sacking of the PM, the celebrations which were joined by the president.
The sacked PM had earlier fired the health minister in an attempt to calm the situation, but it did not work.
