Burundi National Assembly President to be sworn-in after Nkurunziza death

Pascal Nyabenda, the President of the Burundi National Assembly, is being sworn in as new President ahead of inauguration of President-elect Evariste Ndayishimiye in August.

This comes after the government announced the death of outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza, 55.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, Nkurunziza died after suffering a heart attack.

According to the BBC,  he was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell.

 

His condition then improved, but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Late last month, Burundi’s First Lady Denise Nkurunziza was admitted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, after she reportedly contracted the novel coronavirus.

She was airlifted to Kenya’s Capital from Bujumbura, flying  on an Amref plane.

Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi had said since the matter concerns the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a comprehensive statement would be issued from the docket.

“I can confirm that Kenya has one of the best health care systems but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue a statement on her status and whether such privileges will be extended to other Kenyans,” she said.

A statement is yet to be issued.
