President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga are hosting newly elected lawmakers for a breakfast meeting ahead of their swearing in today, Tuesday, December 2.

Ruto, in his capacity as the UDA party leader, and Oburu invited the seven last evening for breakfast in a meeting attended by parliamentary leadership from both the majority and minority.

The invite was also extended to those who ran on the broad-based allied parties but were unsuccessful.

The seven include Baringo Senator-elect Kiprono Chemitei and MPs-elect Maalim Hassan (Banisa), David Ndakwa (Malava) and Leo Muthende (Mbeere North) of UDA and Moses Omondi (Ugunja), Boyd Were (Kasipul), and Harrison Kombe (Magarini) of ODM.

National Assembly will hold an orientation session for MPs-elect at the Speakers’ Gardens, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi ahead of their swearing-in.

The orientation, which will take place from 9 am, shall cover registration and collection of bio-data, processing of parliamentary identification cards, briefing on the use of Chamber System, a familiarisation tour of the precincts of Parliament, and an overview of key legislative matters.

Regional Maritime Security Conference kicks off in Nairobi

Nairobi is set to host a high-level, regional maritime security conference to strengthen coordination towards a harmonised approach to addressing maritime security across the Red Sea, East Africa, Southern Africa, and the Western Indian Ocean.

The event, dubbed "EU Regional Maritime Security Week", will be held at Safari Park Hotel from 8 am.

It will feature discussions on maritime threats such as piracy, illicit trafficking, and unsafe navigation, which remain interconnected and transnational.

It is organised by the European Union (EU) in collaboration with Kenya, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), and Interpol.

The event takes place a month after Kenya Defence Force's Marine commandos intercepted a flagless motor vessel, 'Mashallah', that had been under the watch of international drug enforcement agencies, in the Indian Ocean on October 23.

A successful search and seizure operation led to the recovery of 769 packets of methamphetamine totalling 1,024 kilograms, valued at $63 million (Sh8.2 billion).

CS Wahome to appear before MPs over poor accessibility of public buildings in Mombasa

The Senate Committee on Labour & Social Welfare will meet the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development Alice Wahome over inaccessibility of government buildings and offices by Persons Living with Disabilities (PWD’s) in Mombasa County.

The meeting with members of the committee will take place from 11 am at Bunge Towers.

Many buildings in Mombasa, particularly public ones, are inaccessible to people with disabilities (PWDs) due to issues like broken lifts and lack of ramps, according to recent reports and a Senate committee investigation.

Specific examples include Bima Towers, where lifts are often broken, and the Betting Control and Licensing Board premises, where the Senate committee noted inaccessibility.

While Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir has implemented some accessibility improvements, such as moving departments and installing ramps, ongoing challenges remain.
