A family holiday in Mombasa ended in tragedy after a four-year-old boy fell to his death from the rooftop of an apartment building in Nyali, Mombasa County.

Police said the family had checked into a short-stay apartment on November 8, 2025, for a one-week vacation and occupied a room on the second floor.

On Monday, November 10, the boy accompanied his sibling and an aunt to the swimming pool within the complex, while their mother stepped out to Bamburi for errands.

According to police reports, a few minutes later, the boy left the pool area alone, apparently intending to return to the family’s room.

Surveillance footage later revealed he entered the lift but mistakenly pressed the button for the seventh floor.

The footage showed the child stepping out on the seventh floor and walking up to the rooftop.

Police said the rooftop area houses several solar panels used for power generation.

Investigators believe the boy may have stepped on one of the panels, possibly sustaining an electric shock that caused him to lose balance and fall to the ground floor.

He died instantly.

Guards at the apartment were alerted by the loud thud of the fall and rushed to the scene, where they found the child’s body lying in a pool of blood.

Efforts to save him were futile.

The distraught mother was called to the scene shortly afterward.

Police officers arrived moments later and processed the scene before moving the body to the mortuary.

Plans were later made to transfer the remains to Nairobi and Eldoret for burial arrangements.

Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno confirmed the incident, saying investigations were underway to establish the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy.

“It is a sad incident, and our officers are investigating to determine what exactly happened,” Nuno said.

In a separate incident, a night guard was killed in an attack at his workstation in Khumusalaba, Khwisero, Kakamega County.

The guard, identified as Nahashon Namungu, 56, was found lying in a pool of blood near the shop he was guarding.

Police said the motive of the attack was not immediately clear, as nothing appeared stolen from the scene.

Detectives visited the area as investigations began.

No arrests had been made by Tuesday evening.

Elsewhere in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County, police discovered the body of Daniel Ngetich Birgen near his home in Chesumei village.

Officers reported that the body had injuries on the legs but there was no blood at the scene, raising suspicion that he may have been killed elsewhere and dumped.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further investigations.
