Ministry of Tourism Chief Administrative Secretary Wilson Sossion has championed the housing levy that was proposed by President William Ruto.

Sossion said the revised housing levy should be implemented as soon as possible and the 6 per cent worker contribution and margin contribution of every worker to be adhered to as stated in the Bill.

"Kenyan workers retire into poverty and death because of poor savings, and that is why it has been revised upwards," he said during an interview with K24.

The former Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary said the main problem facing the country is acute poverty at the household level.

The CAS said that there is a rise of slums in the country because the Housing Act that was started some years back was not well addressed.

"Our cities have seen a rise of slums and we are getting workers who are earning as little as Sh5000 and paying as much as Sh5000 for houses that have no value," he said.

Sossion said that to serve the housing problem there is a need for partnership between the government and other sectors that are not only private-based.

"We cannot donate our country to the private sector forever, there should be a partnership," he added.

He said once the government is in place it will be in a position to deliver the basic needs of the people.

Last week President William Ruto in Embu said that in the Finance Bill 2023, the government has introduced the housing levy fund that would see salaried Kenyans contribute three per cent of their income monthly.

“The real motivation behind the housing plan is the jobs we are going to create for the young people of Kenya,” he said.
