Leaders from Kakamega County now want MPs to listen to the voice of the people ahead of the debate on the Finance Bill, 2023.

On Sunday, a section of Luhya leaders converged for a fundraising event at the Bulimbo Catholic Church in Matungu subcounty where opinions on the Bill dominated the event.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa urged residents to come out in large numbers during public participation.

"What citizens are worried about is the Finance Bill, give your opinions so that MPs use your views to vote correctly," Barasa said.

He encouraged Kakamega MPs to remember what citizens want when the Bill goes to voting.

"They must listen so that we have in the amendment Bill. When we have amendments then it will be possible to support economic growth," he said.

This comes even as other Luhya leaders on Saturday urged MPs to reject amendments in the Finance Bill which they said will be burden Kenyans.

Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula said the MPs should put aside their interests and prioritise Kenyans.

"We will be watching to see who votes for the Bill and if they do that then in 2027 you should not vote for them again, they will go home," Savula said.

Malava MP Malulu Injendi who is allied to the Kenya Kwanza government was tasked with informing President William Ruto about the dissenting voice of Kakamega residents concerning the Bill.

On Saturday, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa reiterated the need for legislators to reject the proposed amendments in the Finance Bill.

"The cost of everything is too high and we can't burden Kenyans anymore. I urge our MPs to reject this Bill," Wamalwa said.

The Kakamega MPs include; Nabii Nabwera (Lugari), Titus Khamala (Lurambi), Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo), Fred Ikana (Shinyalu) and Benard Shinali (Ikolomani).

Others are Miradi Aseka (Khwisero), Tindi Mwale (Butere), Peter Salasya (Mumias East), Johnson Naicca (Mumias West), Oscar Nabulindo (Matungu) and County MP Elsie Muhanda.
