Thika law courts senior magistrate Fredrick Koome has warned business people from engaging in illegal dealings.

He said such dealings could land them in trouble in the long run.

“I want to tell the business communities that they lose a lot once they are arrested. The fines are quite high as set up by the law,” he said.

He spoke as he supervised the destruction of toxic milk and illicit brews in Thika.

The senior magistrate warned residents of Thika, Kiambu County, to be more cautious when buying milk and liquor from unauthorized persons.

He advised the public to buy their milk from licensed milk vendors.

“We have destroyed about 60 litres of milk and 160 litres of different alcoholic drinks that did not comply with the necessary regulatory requirements,” Koome said.

The suspects were arraigned and they pleaded guilty. They were fined between Sh60, 000 to Sh100, 000.

The court read out their sentences and also ordered the destruction of the exhibits produced.

Koome urged the business communities to caution their members against selling liquor and other drinks that fall short of the regulatory requirements of the law.

The developments come in the wake of a crackdown against illicit brew across the country.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua last week appealed to the Church and other religious leaders to back the Government's efforts to eradicate illicit brews and abuse of drugs.

"We are at the risk of losing an entire generation to drugs and alcoholism. The ongoing crackdown on illicit brews, second-generation alcohol and drugs in Central Kenya will be rolled out in other parts of the country. I urge the church leaders to help us in mentorship and talking to the youth," the Deputy President said.

He had added that the ongoing crackdown at the five counties of the former Central Province; Kiambu, Murang'a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri and Nyandarua was bearing fruit.
