Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei now says that not even a comma will be amended in the proposed Finance Bill 2023.

According to the UDA senator, the August House will have no choice but to pass the Bill.

He went on to say that the government has only two options, to borrow or raise revenue through tax.

Cherargei said Kenyans are now paying for the Sh10 trillion debt that was a result of the handshake government.

"On the Finance Bill 2023, the decision to pass by Parliament is not optional where even coma shall not be amended because we either borrow more or raise our revenue through taxation. The serious public debt of Sh10 trillion was put by Handshake governemnt of Uhuru/ Tinga that the Kenyans are paying heavily now," the Nandi senator said.

He further called out Opposition leader Raila Odinga for staying quiet when the previous regime continued borrowing.

"Tinga did not raise an objection in handshake governemnt yet he was senior advisor to Uhuru then this hypocrisy should stop. This is because no new taxes are being introduced in the country. Kulipa ushuru ni kujitegemea!" he said.

The Azimio leader had on Monday termed as “a piece of punishment” President William Ruto's proposed tax law.

The Bill, among others, proposes an increase in the National Hospital Insurance Fund Contribution, especially for high earners.

It also introduces a mandatory deduction of three per cent of salary to the housing fund and raises taxes from the current 30 per cent to 35 per cent on those earning Sh500,000 and above.

“It is even more shocking that a regime that rode to office promising to lessen the burden on the so-called hustlers, mama mboga, watu wa mjengo, can turn its back so soon on the people,” Raila said at a press conference on Monday.

“The Bill is a promissory note to strangle and suffocate the hustlers whom Ruto promised to remove the rope from their necks.”

The opposition chief also tabled fresh demands to the Kenya Kwanza team starting with an immediate stoppage of non-essential government expenditures.
